What is Age Related Macular Degeneration?

Age-related macular degeneration, often call AMD, is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people who are age 60 and older. It is estimated that 10 million people will experience this disorder during their retirement years. Macular degeneration is a disorder of the retina. The macula is a small central portion of the retina which is necessary for sharp “straight ahead” vision needed for reading, driving, or recognizing faces.

There are two types of age-related macular degeneration: Dry AMD, accounts for 80% of all cases of AMD, and Wet AMD, which occurs in the other 20% of cases. Dry AMD is an early stage of the disorder and may result from aging and thinning of the macula. Through a period of years, slow progression to late-stage atrophy can occur and can cause severe vision loss. With Wet AMD, new abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak blood and fluid. Eventually if left untreated, the process creates scarring and vision loss. Risk factors for macular degeneration include: Age; Hereditary; Smoking; and Hypertension.

No FDA-approved treatments are available for Dry AMD, although a few are now in clinical trials. A clinical trial called Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) has produced strong evidence that certain nutrients such as beta carotene, Vitamin C and E, Lutein, and Omega 3-fatty acids may help to slow the progression of Dry AMD. In Wet AMD, Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) drugs such as Lucentis, Avastin, Macugen, and Eylea can be injected into the eye to cause the abnormal leaking blood vessels to stop bleeding or leaking.

The Amsler Grid is used to screen for Macular Degeneration. The test involves looking at a square grid with a dot in the center. The grid should be held 12 inches away from the face, while wearing reading eye glasses. Cover one eye at a time and stare at the dot in the center of the grid. If there appears to be any blurry spots, or lines look distorted there could be the possibility of AMD and a phone call to the Retina Department at Katzen Eye Group should be made.

What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a group of eye disorders that can cause damage to the optic nerve and lead to permanent loss of vision if left untreated.

Why is it important that I get my eyes examined?

Glaucoma is the 2nd leading cause of blindness worldwide and the leading cause of blindness in African Americans. An estimated 2.25 million Americans have glaucoma and half are unaware they have it! Damage may be prevented if caught early and treatment is started.

Who gets Glaucoma?

Anyone can get Glaucoma. Main risk factors include: Older age, high eye pressure, family history, African/hispanic ancestry, steroid use, and trauma/injury to your eye.

Are there different types of glaucoma?

Yes, there are 2 general types:

1.Open angle Glaucoma

2. Narrow/Closed angle Glaucoma.

Does my eye pressure have to be “high” to have Glaucoma?

No. While the higher the eye pressure, the greater the risk for Glaucoma, Glaucoma can happen at ANY pressure.

How will I know if I have Glaucoma?

Most people (90%) do not have any symptoms of Glaucoma until significant damage has occurred or the eye pressure is very high (10%). Glaucoma is nicknamed the "silent thief of sight" because the loss of vision normally occurs gradually over a long period of time and is often only recognized when the disease is quite advanced. This is why being examined by your eye doctor is so important.

What can be done if I have Glaucoma?

There is currently no cure for Glaucoma; however, medication or surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. Early detection is vital to stopping the progress of the disease.

Who should have their eyes examined?

• Anyone with a family history of Glaucoma

• African ancestry > 40 years

• All individuals > 60 years

• Anyone with poor peripheral (side) vision

As they age, most people experience a reduction in the ability to focus on close range items, such as reading material or a computer screen. Referred to as presbyopia, this process usually begins to create noticeable vision changes between the ages of forty and fifty, and is the result of a loss of flexibility in the lenses of the eyes. At Katzen Eye Group, in the Baltimore, Maryland area, we help treat these changes in vision with monovision LASIK vision correction.

What Is Monovision?
Many people experiencing presbyopia use bifocals—glasses with lens insets in the bottom to correct close vision, while the rest of the lens is structured to aid distance vision. Another way to treat presbyopia is through monovision.

Monovision can be achieved with contact lenses or with corrective surgery such as LASIK. Rather than having multiple lens prescriptions in a single pair of eyeglasses, monovision results in having one eye corrected so that its close distance vision is more efficient, while the other eye is adjusted for distance vision. By using one eye or the other, you can focus on close items or items in the distance. Though it sounds uncomfortable or difficult, it generally only takes a short amount of time to adjust to.

Possible Disadvantages of Monovision

In general, monovision is a comfortable and convenient way to treat presbyopia without having to resort to the inconvenience of glasses. When your mom told you that carrots are good for your eyes, she was giving you good advice. More than 10 million Americans have Age-Related Macular Degeneration. This eye disease is now one of the leading causes of blindness and vision loss for people 65 years or older in this county.

While there is no cure for Age-Related Macular Degeneration, new studies show what you eat may help slow the progression or reduce the risk or having this debilitating disease.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology released a cookbook called "Feast Your Eyes on This" on their Eye Care America website. This book recommends a diet rich in antioxidants. Some recommended foods include:

Lutein and Zeaxanthin - found in leafy green vegetables, such as broccoli, spinach, collard greens.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids – choose fish, nuts, vegetable oils and leafy greens.
Vitamin C – foods rich in vitamin C include oranges, green peppers and tomatoes.
Vitamin E – safflower oil, nuts and seeds are a good source of vitamin E.
Zinc – select lean cuts of red meat, shellfish, nuts, whole grains, milk and eggs.
Beta Carotene – pick dark orange and yellow fruits and vegetables like carrots, mangos, sweet potatoes and peaches.

How Long Does Latisse Take To Work?

Approved by the FDA in 2008, Latisse is a relatively new prescription medication that treats sparse or insufficient eyelashes by stimulating eyelash growth. It is applied with a sterile applicator to the lash line of the upper lashes—never the lower lashes. The medication will reach the lower lashes as you blink, so it does not need to be applied directly to the lower lash line. Latisse is usually applied once a day, in the evening. The Baltimore, Maryland area eye surgeons at Katzen Eye Group can provide additional information about Latisse and how it can help restore your lashes.

Latisse does not provide instant results. It usually takes at least two months before the lashes begin to thicken, with full results occurring within three to four months. In order to see full results from Latisse, you must be diligent in applying it nightly. If you stop using Latisse, your eyelashes will in time return to their previous thickness. After three or four months, at which time your lashes should be noticeably fuller, your doctor might scale your dosage back to once every other night instead of every night.

Be sure to closely follow the instructions provided when using Latisse. Latisse is a prescription medication, derived from a medication used to treat glaucoma. It can cause changes to your internal eye pressure, so it is important not to change your dosages of Latisse. Increasing the dosage will not speed the results, and introduces additional risks that are not present if you apply Latisse according to directions.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of permanent blindness worldwide, and affects approximately four million people in the United States. Regular screening is vital to detect this disease and ensure proper treatment is provided early in its progression. What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma occurs when the aqueous humor, or the liquid inside the eyeball, builds up or does not drain properly, creating excess pressure within the eye. Eventually, this pressure causes permanent damage to the optic nerve, resulting in vision loss.

The exact cause of glaucoma is not known, but the liquid usually builds up when too much is produced or when the regular drainage system becomes blocked. Under normal conditions, the fluid is replenished regularly and drains out of the eyeballs into the bloodstream. When this process is disrupted, glaucoma results.

Diagnosing Glaucoma

Glaucoma is diagnosed by measuring the pressure inside the eyeball. A procedure called tonometry tests intraocular pressure to see if it is higher than normal. A visual field test is also often administered to test peripheral vision. One symptom of glaucoma is gradual loss of peripheral vision, so the visual field test can determine if your peripheral vision is normal or if it has degraded.

Everyone should be tested for glaucoma during their regular yearly eye exam. Latisse® for Longer Eyelashes

Would you like to be able to flutter your long, dark eyelashes? If you start today, you could be doing that in eight weeks and still be only half-way to your final exciting results.

Latisse is a fairly new product that we are now offering, FDA-approved for enhancing the eyelashes. It is easy to apply. It comes in a small bottle and with a supply of disposable applicators. Simply put one drop on a new applicator and draw it along the upper eyelid at the base of your eyelashes. Blot any excess, throw away the applicator, and repeat the process on the other eye with a fresh applicator.

Latisse works by extending the growth phase of the hair growth cycle and by stimulating each hair follicle to produce more than one lash. It also stimulates melanin production although exactly how it works is not fully understood. It is based on some of the eyedrops used for Glaucoma which have a side effect of lengthening the eyelashes.

After eight weeks, you will see longer and darker eyelashes and after 16 weeks, the full treatment period, you will surely be pleased and excited about the results.

There are a few little side effects but most people do not experience them. You might have some itchiness or irritation in your eyes or some redness in your eyes or eyelids. It will most likely be temporary but will certainly stop if you stop using Latisse. Do not use Latisse on the lower eyelids because it could cause extra hair growth beyond your eyelashes.

A Russian doctor had been treating a young lad with cuts in his eyes from broken spectacles during a fall. The boy sustained only minor eye damage when the broken glass shaved a layer off the eye's outer surface. Symptoms and Signs of Glaucoma

Glaucoma, a group of conditions that cause optic nerve damage, often give few warning signs or symptoms until permanent damage has already occurred. How Long Does LASIK Last? LASIK Touch Ups

The lasting effects of LASIK have been studied since it gained widespread acceptance for vision correction in the year 2000, making it the most studied elective procedure. Studies have shown that 95 to 98 percent of laser vision correction patients obtain a minimum of 20/40 vision.
